Whey Proteins- Your friend or enemy?

If you are a fitness freak or a gym rat, then you must be knowing about Whey Proteins. There are so many myths around about them- some people find them to be good, but most of the people think that they might have adverse effect on their body. I'm no certified trainer or a nutritionist. You can think of me as your friend who wants to help you with your fitness queries. Sure, you must be thinking that I'm a supplement seller and I would promote supplements but that's not the truth.

I started working out in 2015 and that was when I started my fitness journey by joining a fitness club in my city, I also have that misconception that Whey Proteins are bad for health and they are nothing but steroids! Yes, that is the most common misconception about the Whey Proteins, especially in India. If you are an Indian reader, then you must have heard your parents telling you not to take powders or your friends, who have no knowledge about supplementation giving you advice about them or telling you to "Go Natural".
The first thing I wanted to tell you is that Whey Proteins are natural until and unless you are not consuming any fake product. If you are living in India, then you must be knowing about the fake products and how they are being sold by the people around you. Though, not every retailer or trainer sells you these fake products, there are some genuine people I know who deals in only genuine stuff. When I wanted to start with my business then there were many supplement dealers who told me not to enter this market, solely due to extensive competition and very low return on investment. But, I still wanted to do it so that I could not just earn my "bread and butter" but also to help many individuals in their fitness journeys.

Whey proteins are derived from milk. If you have seen your mom, making paneer or cottage cheese then you must have seen the water that is left after the process. That is known as the Whey. We usually throw that water after deriving paneer from it, but in big manufacturing plants that whey is processed further to make Whey Protein. It usually takes around 720 lbs of whey to make one 5 lbs jar of Whey Protein. So you can imagine the size of the plant, machines and cost involved in doing so. Then just to enhance the taste and digestibility, companies add "Blends" to the jar. These are nothing but a formula that varies from company to company, containing flavours, sugar, digestive enzymes and other performance enhancing supplements like BCAA, Arginine, Creatine, etc.

There are three major kinds of Whey Proteins available in the market- Concentrated, Isolate and Hydrolyzed. You can choose from them according to your needs and budget. I personally prefer Concentrated Whey protein because they are comparatively cheap because of low protein availability per serving, slow digestibility and presence of carbs in them. While Isolate Whey protein powders are absorbed at a faster rate and have very low amount of carbs and Hydrolyzed is the purest form of protein where there is no carbs or sugar available in them.
So choose wisely and I have a request guys, please don't think that I want to promote my business and that is why I'm writing all this, the truth is that I'm also a victim of fake product and I don't want anybody else to be cheated.
If you don't want to buy supplement then that is also fine, don't consume them. Eat white meat, red meat, dairy products like paneer and soy.
I hope you liked my view on Whey Protein. If you have any queries, just mail us on powerhousenutritionindia@gmail.com and we will try and solve them.
